R.H. Batterman & Company (Batterman) is a full-service engineering firm with three core services: land surveying, civil engineering, and construction management. Batterman was founded by Richard H. Batterman in 1917 in Beloit, Wisconsin. The current ownership group of Frank McKearn, Lance Wagner and Todd Needham have grown the company from what was historically a 20+ employee firm to now almost 50 staff professionals with three office locations (Janesville, Beloit, and Elkhorn).The Batterman survey department offers residential, commercial, and public land surveying services including plats of surveys, Certified Survey Maps (CSM) for land divisions, elevation certificates, Letter of Map Amendments, topographic surveys, ALTA Land Title surveys, Right of Way plats, construction layout and staking services. Batterman employs leading edge equipment including robotic total stations, GPS units, 3-D scanners, and a fleet of survey grade drones.Batterman’s design department includes a team of licensed Professional Engineers which provide a wide range of engineering and planning services. Services include site/civil design for retail, commercial and industrial developments, municipal engineering (sewer, water storm sewer design), water resource/stormwater design, transportation engineering (state highways, county roads, city and town roads), park and path design, plan and specification development, funding and grant assistance, public outreach meetings, agency coordination, permitting, and bidding services.The Batterman staff of construction engineers oversees a wide array of complex construction projects, ranging from commercial and industrial site development projects, municipal infrastructure improvements, to major multi-year interstate reconstruction projects. Our construction management team is comprised of a staff of licensed Professional Engineers and technicians which employ a solution driven approach to each project.We listen intently to understand our client’s challenges and requests, to ensure we’re able to meet or exceed their expectations. Batterman provides clear communication, while being guided by our uncompromising principles to deliver simple solutions to complex problems.

Why did you choose to locate downtown?

With the IH 39/90 corridor project through Janesville projected to be finished at the end of 2022, the field office which our construction staff of approximately ten called home for many years, would also end. Due to substantial company growth, there simply were not offices for our field staff to return to, which initiated our search for a third location! The decision to locate in downtown Janesville was never in question. Many of our employees live in the Janesville area, and as we continue to grow, we strive to attract new employees from areas such as Madison or Rockford. We understand the importance of offering an inviting workplace located in an area that offers a variety of amenities, such as diverse housing options, restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, exercise opportunities, and the beautiful riverfront. Batterman has been involved with the Arise project, both in terms of construction services as well as financial contributions, and the transformation of the downtown area has been nothing short of amazing to witness. Our new office space in the Bennison Lane building provides Batterman with an amazing opportunity to meet and interact with our existing staff and clients, while also providing space for expansion.

What's the best thing about being downtown?

The interaction with all the groups that make this city great, and the endless opportunities that downtown Janesville offers. The City of Janesville staff, Forward Janesville, Downtown Janesville Incorporated, and the Downtown Janesville Business Improvement District are examples of groups working together to make this city great. With these collaboration efforts over the last few years, we have watched our city blossom into an amazing downtown area to invite clients, friends, and family to visit and enjoy all it has to offer. During one afternoon in downtown Janesville, you have the opportunity to experience five star restaurants, bars, music venues, take the kids to the new splash pad, throw axes at a wall, or take advantage of the newly renovated riverfront. On a summer Saturday, you can spend a day at the Janesville farmers market in the new town square, or on a chilly early spring day, sample hundreds of different kinds of beer at Flannel Fest. In mid-June, spend a few days watching world class bicyclists compete at the Janesville Town Square Bicycle Gran Prix, which we are proud sponsors of. These wonderful groups, opportunities, and social events are all reasons Batterman is excited to call downtown Janesville home.
